Policy Statement: Family Preservation

Origins Canada supports the right of mothers to nurture their children in safe and healthy environments and advocates
for the preservation of families.

Origins Canada supports the right of every mother — regardless of marital status, age, sexuality, race, socioeconomic status, or disability – to have the resources to parent children in safe and healthy environments.

Article 7 of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child

1. The child shall be registered immediately after birth and shall have the right from birth to a name, the right to acquire a nationality and. as far as possible, the right to know and be cared for by his or her parents.

Origins Canada recognizes the basic human right of the child to be with his or her family of origin and to receive supports that uphold this right, except in cases where a child is proven to be at risk of harm.

Any child separated from their natal family should be provided stable living arrangements that honour and maintain their connection to their family of origin wherever possible.
