Policy Statement: Equal Rights for Persons Adopted

Origins Canada supports equal rights for persons adopted.

Persons adopted should have equal rights to all other Canadian citizens. This includes the right to unrestricted access to all birth documentation and family medical information, a right taken for granted by most Canadians.

In addition, no individual citizen in Canada should have the right to prevent another individual citizen in Canada from obtaining their own legal documentation of birth and family which is currently the case as indicated through VETOES in some provincial legislation.

All individuals, including persons adopted, have the right to search for, freely associate with, and explore continuing relationships with any and all relatives from whom they have been separated by adoption, if they so choose.

Origins Canada supports legislation that restores these rights to persons adopted in all provinces in Canada.
