Policy Statement: Mother’s Day and “Birthmother’s” Day

Origins Canada does not support “Birthmothers Day”, but supports

the celebration of Mothers Day to honour all mothers.

Origins Canada asserts that the existence of two separate social celebrations called “Mothers Day” and “Birthmothers Day” perpetuates the marginalization of mothers separated from their children by adoption and undermines their lived experience and recognition in Canadian society as mothers.

Mothers who are separated from their children by adoption have the right to be honoured on Mothers Day.  Mothers Day is rightfully and equally their day to reflect upon, celebrate and acknowledge their motherhood as they choose to do; and to stand equally with all other mothers on that day.
