The term "birthmother" is used on this website for search engine purposes only. The word "birth mother" is a derogatory, degrading, and inhumane term, essentially meaning breeder or incubator. Origins Canada does NOT condone its use as a term for mothers separated from their children by adoption.

"Natural mother" was the term commonly in use until the adoption industry created terms like "birth mother" to tell us that we are no longer mothers. Natural mothers are more than this. We never signed away our love or our innate motherhood.

Words like "birth mother" give the impression that people can become "ex" family. You can have an ex-boyfriend, but you can never have an ex-child or become an ex-mother.

Joining Origins Canada

If you are interested in joining Origins Canada, this is the information you may be interested in knowing first:

How Origins Canada is structured:

  • We're a new group, the Canadian affiliate of Origins Inc (NSW), and we're organizing in Canada as independent provincial chapters, as Origins Inc. has done in Australia.

  • Just as with Origins Inc., the "backbone" of the organization will be a network of "in-person" support groups for exiled parents and support groups for adopted persons, exiled parents and others separated from family by adoption. No, we are not a "triad group."

  • We have an e-list on Yahoogroups which is for information-sharing, support, networking, and to help local support groups and provincial chapters start and grow.

  • If you live in an area where there is currently not an existing Origins Canada support group, please consider starting one. In coordination with our "mother group" Origins Inc., we're developing a handbook for members to help them run local Origins support groups.

  • More info will be soon posted here about the Origins newsletter.
