The trauma of losing a child to adoption has been mostly ignored in Canada in the past. Also not acknowledged is the trauma to a newborn, in many cases literally torn from their mother’s breast, her smell, her sound, her feel, gone to him or her forever.
These events happened in Canada during the “Baby Scoop Era” from 1955 to 1985 and the trauma of losing a child immediately after birth has had long lasting consequences to both mother and child. This fact has not been acknowledged due to the pro-adoption machine which still reigns in this country.
Protecting the adoptive parents “right to have children” has superceded all rationale in Canada, and hiding the abuses and illegal adoption practices of the last quarter of the last century is still the order of the day. The protection of Adoptive Parents, Governments, those in the Medical Profession, Social Workers, Children’s Aid Societies, Religious Organizations and others still prevails over the rights and protections of natural parents and those who were adopted.
The shame that has in the past kept “the unwed mother” silent and continues to label her a “Birthmother” still keeps many silent and this has increased the power of those who have kept the status quo of Canadian adoption as it is for so many years.
Many mothers who lost their children to adoption still suffer in silence and shame, and still do not know or even understand the trauma they were subjected to as they are still “in the adoption fog” still calling themselves “birthmothers”, a name given to them by the adoption industry.
As they learn that they were victims of a systematic machine which conspired to take their children their anger ignites…..and they unite….. here at ORIGINS.
