Honest, Accurate and Correct Language |
| Birth or Biological Parent | Mother, father, natural mother, natural father |
| Parent | Adoptive Parent or Adopter |
| Unwed | Single |
| Birth/Biological or natural child | Son/daughter |
| Illegitimate | Child born to single parents |
| Give up, give away, abandon, placed | Surrendered, lost to adoption |
| Backed out/ reneged, changed her mind | Decided to stay with and parent her own child |
| Orphan | Child with two deceased parents |
| Taken Away | Parental rights involuntarily terminated |
| Adopted Child | A minor child who was adopted, never an adult who was adopted as a child |
| They are not adopted parents until an adoption is finalized. | Prior to an adoption being finalized caretakers are caretakers, foster parents, or prospective adopters. |
